World Lion Day

9 August 2024

Happy World Lion Day from our two prides! The Lions of Longleat have been famous around the globe since they arrived in Wiltshire in 1966 when the first Safari Park outside of Africa was created.

Lions are the only social big cat species, often living in prides that hunt for food together. Working as a team, they stalk or ambush their prey - but they're also not above scavenging when needed. Lions are classed as vulnerable with the African lion population having almost halved, with 22,500 estimated to be remaining in the wild today.

Males live up to 14 years and females up to 18 years; males can grow up to 1.2m at the shoulder and weigh as much as 250kg.
