Icons of the Sky - Day One

Friday 12 September 2025

From a spectacular spitfire to a perfect parachutist display, the skies above Longleat resounded to the sound of engines and gasps of delight from the gathered crowd.

While the weather disrupted the planned hot air balloon ascents, the air display was breathtaking despite the weather.

With dramatic loop the loops, multi-coloured smoke, and roaring warbirds guests were treated to the sounds of iconic T6 Harvards and Spitfires, as well as high octane aerobatic displays. The Callidus Grob even waved his wings as he finished his display, much to the joy of the guests.

The RAF Falcons jumped in formation from between 3000 – 2500ft in just minutes, with trailing red smoke showing their descent. Flying in from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, the nine strong team made a graceful entrance at Longleat, rounding off Friday’s air display slot.

Tethered displays took place throughout the day, with Simbaloo the lion and Adelaide the koala joining the line-up. Mr Cool the Babybel balloon stood tall alongside Longleat House, as Wednesday Addams appeared too.

Scott Ashman, Head of Operations, said: “The air display was absolutely stunning, and we were delighted to welcome such a range of different planes to the skies above Longleat.

“Naturally, having hot air balloons able to fly would have been fantastic, but the wind speeds 1000+feet above the air were too fast for safe flights and safety is always our priority.

“However, as Icons of the Sky is included in our standard day ticket, we knew there was plenty of different activities for people to see and do even though balloon ascents were unable to go ahead.

“There were lots of happy faces around and people enjoyed having photographs taken in balloon baskets, listening to Jamma de Samba band and playing on colourful inflatables as well as discovering the many animals that call Longleat home.

“We are monitoring the weather continually and will be updating visitors throughout each day of the weekend. We are looking forward to more fabulous displays tomorrow.”
