Longleat’s four new hippos have taken their first walk on the wild side of Half Mile Pond next to the stately home.

Matylda, Manon, Lola & Hodor arrived at the Estate in June and have been spotted in the outdoor pond by guests since then; now they have taken their first steps in the paddock with the aim of having them regularly outdoors over the months ahead.

Darren Beasley, Head of Animal Operations, said: “We are gradually introducing them to their surroundings and each other as well as spending time with them getting to know their keepers.

“As they came from different places, we are not rushing bringing them together as a four; they have met each other in the House nose-to-nose are getting used to each other’s scent before we will do and are already using their indoor and outdoor pools as well as rotating access in the field.”

The new family pod can be seen from Jungle Cruise, which is included in our Day Ticket, and the hope is they will be in Half Mile Pond regularly next month. Summer Carnival which has fairground rides and workshops also included in the ticket runs until 31 August.
