Aardvark

Orycteropus afer

Our aardvark adventures

Frankie and Nacho, two female aardvarks, joined us in 2017 and have been stealing our hearts ever since. Benny, a male, joined the group in 2018. It wasn't long before sparks flew and our first baby aardvark, a major milestone in our care and conservation, was born in the autumn of 2020.

Aardvarks among us

Although aardvarks are not endangered, humans remain their biggest threat. Developments such as the use of pesticides in farming reduce the insect population upon which the aardvarks rely. Also, landowners are known to cull aardvarks due to the damage caused to their land by the holes the aardvarks dig to find food.

Did you know?

Abandoned aardvark burrows provide shelter to other species such as African wild dogs, snakes, and birds, contributing to their local ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.
