Our Fennec family
Our fennec foxes Zuri and Enzi made headlines in 2024 when they produced the only kits known to have been born in UK zoos or safari parks in the past 12 months. With only around 40% of fennec fox babies surviving to adulthood, our keepers hand-reared the kits around the clock.
Born weighing just 46g each, these tiny survivors are now thriving as a vital addition to the global breeding programme. You can find our fennec family with their distinctive oversized ears in Animal Adventure.
Cool under pressure
When desert temperatures soar, fennec foxes have an incredible cooling system - extreme panting. Their breathing rate rockets from a normal 23 breaths per minute to an amazing 690 breaths per minute, acting like a natural air conditioning unit to keep their tiny bodies from overheating in the scorching heat.
