Giant Otter

Pteronura brasiliensis

A giant journey

Giant otters first made their home at Longleat in 2019, alongside koalas and crocodiles in our Animal Adventure expansion project. Arriving to Longleat marked the reunion of Inny and Gordito, a breeding couple who had spent many successful years together in another collection, but had spent over a year separated. Since their reunion they are rarely seen apart. Swimming, exploring, eating and snuggling together.

The ripple effect

Giant otters are endangered in the wild. In the past this was due to poaching for their velvety fur, and mismanaged tourism (with locals considering them a danger and nuisance). More recently its due to ongoing habitat destruction from human development.

Did you know?

Giant otters have evolved interesting aquatic adaptations: webbed feet, water repellent fur and fully sealable ears and nostrils. Other aquatic mammals, like hippos and platypus, also have important water adaptations — not forgetting that whales are also mammals!
