Kirk's Dik Dik

Madoqua kirkii

Tiny but tremendous

Welcoming baby Maple in September 2024 to first-time parents Daenerys and Dario, our dik diks have been residents at Longleat since 2020.

You can try to spot these master hiders in Jungle Kingdom, though dik diks love to blend into the foliage to feel safe, making them quite the challenge to find!

What's in a name?

The dik dik gets its name from both 19th century Scottish naturalist Sir John Kirk and the distinctive alarm call they make when startled. When danger strikes, these tiny antelopes leap from hiding and zigzag away while calling "dik-dik" to confuse predators.

Did you know?

Kirk's dik diks have special noses that retain moisture and help cool them down in hot African weather.
