Slender Tailed Meerkat

Suricata suricatta

Longleat's lookouts

Meerkats have a long history at Longleat, and have always been popular with guests and keepers alike. Having moved to their large walk-through habitat in Jungle Kingdom in 2011, trundling through is often a highlight for visitors. Meerkats are inquisitive and curious so are likely to come up close and inspect your shoes as you stroll through their territory — so watch your toes!

Mob mentality

Meerkats take it in turns to act as sentries for the mob; being a lookout for the group and sounding alarm if they see any approaching predators or dangers. Their vocal range is very sophisticated and they're able to communicate the exact danger and its distance from the mob.

Did you know?

Meerkats live in matriarchal groups. There is a dominant female who mothers most of the offspring. Meerkat groups spend time grooming one another to bond and collectively take care of young, old and vulnerable group members.
