The property's history
Horningsham Lodge, recently attributed to leading Scottish architect Robert Adam, was built in 1761-3, originally with a pitched roof. In the early 1800s Sir Jeffry Wyatville remodelled the building to correspond with the architectural style of the Longleat House, creating the flat roof and balustrade that can be seen today.
The building housed the Longleat porter, who oversaw traffic through the park, and collected special tolls like the sheep drovers’ fees! The single-storey extension on the east side (forming part of the East Lodge accommodation) was added in the 1830s or 1840s, and on the west side in 1947.
East Lodge offers the perfect base to explore the Estate and its historic 'Capability' Brown parkland. Stroll down the Pleasure Walk and take in the unique sculptures dotted along its undulating pathway, as well as its abundant flora and fauna, or walk up to Heaven’s Gate and enjoy its breathtaking view.
