African Lion

Panthera leo

Our lion legacy

Lions were first introduced to Longleat in 1966, establishing the first Drive-Through Safari experience outside Africa. More than 50 years on and lions still roam. Spot each of the two prides on your travels through the safari.

Sleeping lions

Lions sleep for up to 20 hours a day – not dissimilar from their domestic counterparts. This conserves vital energy for hunting, which is usually done at night so they can more easily creep up on prey.

Did you know?

Lion roars can be heard up to 8km away. And the whole pride often roars together.

VIP Lion Experiences

Lions can be found in the Drive-Through Safari

Wind up your windows. Hide all the sandwiches. You’re going on a safari tour that’s wilder, furrier and growlier than you ever dared imagine.
