For many years we've been home to Grant's zebras in our East African Reserve. In summer 2025, stallion Zigzag arrived from Hamerton Zoo Park to join our trio of resident mares, with keepers hopeful for foals in time for our 60th anniversary. See our striped stars as they roam freely alongside giraffes and ostriches on the Drive-Through Safari.

Striped and strong

What makes each zebra special is their unique stripe pattern - vertical on the front, horizontal on back legs, and diagonal in between. In the wild, family groups are led by a protective stallion. When danger strikes, they huddle together creating a confusing mass of stripes to fool predators. Don't underestimate their power though, a zebra kick can kill a fully grown hyena.
