Hippopotamus

Hippopotamus amphibius

Our hippo history

Hippos were first introduced to Longleat back in 1967, just a year after the Safari Park first opened. Spot and Sonia lived peacefully alongside the other animals in Half Mile Pond until their sad passing in 2023 and 2025. Now, the lake is home to a new pod of hippos, and can be seen from the Boat Safari.

Myth busting

Despite its thickness, hippos have very sensitive skin, so they secrete a rust-coloured, oily substance to protect them from the sun. This has led to the belief that they sweat blood — which is a misconception.

Did you know?

Hippos have colossal jaws which can open to 180 degrees and have a bite strength three time larger than a lion's.

VIP Hippo Experiences

Look out for Lola and Hodor during the Gorilla VIP Experience, next door!

Hippos can be spotted on the Boat Safari

You’re off on a voyage of discovery. Sea lions will escort you, but be prepared — they can cause quite a splash! Cruise past Gorilla Colony, the colobus monkeys' island, and the new Hippo Complex.
