Red panda looking to camera eating bamboo leaves

Bamboo and beyond

Red pandas have been thriving here since 2012, when Ajendra arrived, followed by Rufina in 2013. They've become key contributors to the European breeding programme, having had numerous cubs over the years. We support red panda conservation through habitat restoration projects in Nepal and maintain our own bamboo plantation.

Branching out

Native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China, wild red pandas can be found in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China. Here, you can find them in two areas of the park: near the Monkey Temple and by the Boat Safari.

Did you know?

Although classified as carnivores, red pandas mainly eat bamboo, accounting for up to 90% of their diet. They also eat fruits, acorns, roots, and eggs.
