Rhesus Macaque Monkeys

Macaca mulatta

Monkeying around the Safari

Our troop of macaques are a beloved and integral part of Longleat, with their lively behaviour and infamous penchant for mischief. It's likely they will climb on your car, and can cause damage. Unfortunately, we can’t take responsibility for any damage or losses. So if you want to steer clear of the Monkey Drive-Through… use the bypass lane!

Monkey see monkey do

Macaques are highly intelligent, and adaptable. Some even become accustomed to living in human communities. This is especially common in India. They are considered sacred in Hinduism and are often left alone by locals.

Did you know?

Much like us, macaques are highly social, spending much of their time with their troop mates foraging, relaxing, grooming one another and even playing.
