Southern Koalas

Phascolarctos cinereus

Our koala connection

Koala Creek opened in 2019 with the arrival of five southern koalas from South Australia; the first of their kind in Europe. In 2022, we welcomed Europe’s first southern koala joey, Hazel. The team and koalas are helping drive ongoing work to protect koalas and support important research.

Facts to chew on

Koalas almost exclusively eat eucalyptus. The leaves are toxic to most animals but koalas have an unusually large intestine, packed with micro-organisms that detoxify the leaves.

Did you know?

Although often mistaken for bears, koalas are marsupials. They give birth to babies (joeys) who live in their pouch before being born 'again' six months later.
