Southern White Rhinoceros

Ceratotherium simum simum

Our rhino mission

Meet Razina, Ebun and Murashi, three southern white rhinos with a world-saving mission. Our incredible trio are helping scientists perfect groundbreaking IVF technology to rescue the northern white rhino from extinction. See these conservation champions up close on our Drive-Through Safari.

Not so white after all

Despite their name, white rhinos aren't white at all! The word "white" actually comes from the Afrikaans term "widje," meaning "wide", referring to their distinctively broad, square-shaped mouths that are perfectly designed for grazing grass. This wide lip sets them apart from their narrow-lipped cousins, the black rhinos, who browse on leaves and branches instead.

Did you know?

White rhinos are nature's mud bath enthusiasts, they wallow in mud to cool down and naturally remove parasites!
