Our hyena history
We welcomed hyenas to Longleat in 2018, becoming one of the few UK locations to house these often misunderstood cratures. Our aims are to continue to challenge the often negative perceptions of these remarkable animals, build upon conservation initiatives, and celebrate their intelligence and uniqueness with our visitors.
No laughing matter
Although famous for their 'laugh', hyenas use a many vocalisations, postures, and scent markings to communicate. They have similar problem-solving skills to primates, proving them to be highly intelligent animals.
Did you know?
Hyena clans are matriarchal. Females are dominant and direct the clan's activities. From hunting, defence and maintaining the group's order.
