Western Lowland Gorilla

Gorilla gorilla gorilla

Our silverback story

Our history with gorillas dates back to the late 1980s, when Nico first came to the park. He lived well into his 50s and was one of the oldest known in captivity. Although his iconic island pad is now home to our Colobus monkeys, our bachelor group of four gorillas can be seen in their lakeside habitat from the Boat Safari.

Walk like you, talk like you

Similarly to humans, gorilla mothers are pregnant for around 8.5 months and go on to carry and care for them for several years after they're born. They become independent at three to four years old.

Did you know?

Gorillas are socially sophisticated, using a range of vocalisations, postures, and expressions to communicate. Silverback males display dominance through chest pounding, roaring, and charging.
