The property's history
Carpenter’s Cottage is the south side of what was once Carpenter’s House, built in around 1787 for the foreman of the Longleat artificers (head of the Building Yard). From 1787 to about 1860 this house adjoined the timber yard and artificers’ workshops, allowing its occupant a vantage point to supervise the activities of carpenters, masons, coopers, wheelwrights and smiths working in the yard. The building was converted from a single dwelling into a pair of cottages in the 1860s or 1870s, after which time it housed a succession of policemen employed as night watchmen at Longleat and, more recently, a forester and house stewards.
