We have a long history of wolves roaming the safari, but historically these were Canadian timber wolves. In 2019 the first pack of eight European Grey wolves made Longleat their home. The family has grown and changed over the years but can still be spotted prowling around Wolf Wood.
Wolves were hunted to extinction during the 18th century, but are now protected as a keystone species with established packs across Europe, thanks to reintroduction and conservation efforts.
Every wolf has a unique howl. This aids with identification and the difference in pitch makes a pack sound larger when howling as a group.
